Laser Hair Removal: Laser vs IPL

Laser Hair Removal: Laser vs IPL: There is a common misunderstanding amongst our clients between Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Laser. Many clients are misled to believe IPL is a laser. Wherein fact, they are two completely different technologies which produce different results based on hair and skin type. Let me shine some light on the two technologies and their effect on permanent laser hair removal.

LASER

Laser originates from the acronym “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. It is a single concentrated beam of light which penetrates the skin to effectively damage the root of the hair follicle. The laser specifically targets the melanin in the hair follicle with its single wavelength and hinders regrowth. As a result, it very simply, targets deeper, thicker hairs along with finer hairs to produce hair reduction by approximately 85% -87%. Due to the specific target of the laser beam the surrounding skin is not affected, allowing for very little risk of burning the skin.

IPL

Firstly, IPL is NOT a laser. It is a broad spectrum of light which cannot be focused into a concentrated beam. The light is pulsed in different wavelengths and therefore cannot effectively target the depth of each hair follicle. As a result stubborn, thicker hair is not effectively targeted or targeted at all for that matter. The shattered light also heats up the surrounding skin and absorbs into the tissue, which can cause pigmentation and discoloration of the skin. Due to this there is a higher risk of burns for medium to dark skin types.

Overall, IPL machines produce a less effective result for hair removal and require more sittings than a Laser machine.
